Although the temperature was soaring, MercyCare Board and Company Members joined early learning staff, corporate teams, and our dedicated building contractors for an official opening ceremony, which included the symbolic planting of an olive tree.
For MercyCare, planting an olive tree symbolises the connection of Piara Waters Early Learning to our organisation’s unique history, and the responsibility we have to continue the important work of our founding members.
While speaking at the ceremony, MercyCare CEO Anthony Smith expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in the project. “Opening this centre has been a great achievement that expands our early learning footprint to 13 centres across Perth.”
“Many people have played a significant role in creating these inspiring spaces and I am grateful to each of them for their contributions. I’m confident that when the children begin walking through these doors our educators will bring the Mercy spirit to life in everything they do.”
During the event, guests enjoyed tours of the facility complimented by childhood treats! They also participated in a range of play-based activities, designed to remind them of the importance of early years education.
In a quiet moment of reflection, guests took the opportunity to cast their minds back to their own childhood to answer the questions, ‘what sparks your inner child?’, and ‘what brought you joy as a child?’
Centre Manager Leah Mizen enthusiastically addressed the audience, describing her hopes for the early learning centre.
“I want this centre to be THE centre in Piara Waters. I want it to be a community hub where we can support families in more than just their child’s education.”
“I hope we can use our connection to this community to link families into other local services if they ever need extra support to help their children thrive.”
We would like to thank Local Noongar Woman Kandice Hansen for beginning the opening ceremony with a moving Welcome to Country, and Local Noongar Man Adrian Tanner for conducting an immersive smoking ceremony to cleanse the area and provide protection.
The official opening of MercyCare Early Learning Piara Waters was followed by a special Twilight Opening for families and caregivers who were eager to view the centre.
